“Premier League clubs today reluctantly but unanimously decided not to release players for international matches played in red-listed countries next month,” the league said in a statement.

“The clubs’ decision, strongly supported by the Premier League, will apply to nearly 60 players from 19 Premier League clubs who are expected to travel to 26 red-listed countries in the September international window.

“This is in line with FIFA’s current stance not to extend its temporary release exception for players who need to be quarantined upon returning from international duty.

“If quarantine were required upon return from red-listed countries, not only would players’ well-being and fitness be significantly impaired, but they would also be unavailable to prepare for and play in the two rounds of the UEFA Premier League club competitions, matchday and the third round of the EFL Cup”.

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters added: “Premier League clubs have always supported their players’ desire to represent their countries – this is a source of pride for all concerned.
