“Ik geloofde in zijn ontwikkeling, maar eerlijk gezegd had ik me niet voorgesteld dat hij de kwaliteit zou bereiken die hij nu heeft.”

Mikel verliet Chelsea in 2017, na meer dan 370 wedstrijden te hebben gespeeld, om zich aan te sluiten bij de Chinese Super League-club Tianjin TEDA. In 2019 keerde hij terug naar Engeland bij Middlesbrough.

De Nigeriaanse international speelde slechts kort voor de Engelse goedkoop voetbalshirts club en speelde slechts 19 wedstrijden voordat hij de overstap maakte naar het Turkse Trabzonspor, waar hij een tweejarig contract tekende.
